Desperate Measures

Once More Into the Breach...

to Erastus 4711 Having founded the Kingdom of Sturov (with the backing of the Swordlords of Restov) and appointed themselves suitable positions of authority, the novice rulers embark on a slow and steeady expansion. Gradual claims of territory and (where appropriate) the encouragement of farms and the construction of roads. They founding settlement of Sturovia, built at the site of the ruined keep on the banks of the Tuskwater has grown to a small town and the population has grown to trust the rulers, even if a witch has set up residence in the town.

8th to 11th Erastus 4711 Adventure beckons once again. Territories need making safe and as some of the most powerful people in the region it falls on them to do the dirty work. A new resource is discovered (Fangberries) and terrors eradicated (Will O’Wisp, Shambling Mound, armoured troll). New friends are also made (rescued Gnome Expedition).

12th to 18th Erastus 4711 The week of the Druid. Sindarion proves a lynchpin to the group over the next few days. Displaying remarkable diplomacy and grace for one so normally blunt and tactless. A nixie was befriended (with an promise to restore her glade, still to be fufilled) and lumberjacks deployed further north. A fallen unicorn is respectfully interred by Sindarions druid power (but who can kill a Unicorn with magic?) and a Dryad grove saved from the predations of an evil Styhe Tree. The rest of the group play their part too as they flex their new martial and magical prowess against the Tree and the mad attack of a hermit and his Great Cat.

The younger lord put down his goblet. “This merry band seem to be doing well”.
“Indeed” replied the older aristocrat. “They are showing themselves to be quite resourceful. Always a two-edged sword, of course, but one does long for some of our other erstwhile pioneers in the Stolen Lands matched these particular adventurers accomplishments”.
“Well, perhaps in time those in the Greenbelt can take up the slack. We should keep an eye on them though, to make sure they become allies”. The youth drain his wine in one draught, drawing a frown from his mentor.
“They are allies! We provided the funds, manpower and resources on which their kingdom is based. If I judge their character correctly they’ll feel obliged on that score alone, and it’s not as if our cause isn’t just. Still, perhaps an observer of some sort would be appropriate and this juncture…..”

The End of the Beginning

The tiny evil fey were quickly dispatched including their chieftan on his giant tick! The dangerous encounter with a huge centipede lairing in a chasm proved more of a challange before making it back to the surface with a rescued kobold who lead them to his tribe..

Chief Sootscale quickly agreed a peace treaty in return for the end of the mites and the return of a holy idol (the kobolds are to only harass bandits plus access to moon radishes). But Sootscale then smashed the idol and begged us to kill the kobold shaman! After the deed was done, the Shamen’s journal revealed that he was actually a reincarnated insane halfling, bent on destroying the kobold tribe.

The group were forced by the river to detour east encountering the revenant of a victim of the bandits of the Stag Lord. Promising vengence on his behalf they headed South once more before laying eyes on the ruined castle that formed the Stag Lord’s base.

After capturing a supply wagon, the party bluffed their way into the fort and, under the cover of night dispatched the bandits aided by the release of a pet owlbear of the bandits and the turning of one of their number to the party’s cause. The last to fall was the mad druid locked in the cellar guarding the amassed loot of the lawbreakers.

The adventurers have fufilled the terms of the Charter granted by the Sword Lords and now have the spoils of victory. What does the future hold?

Boggard and Boar, Mine and Mites!

1st to 17th Desnus 4710 Desnus proves busy for the group. The quick kill of a boggard lairing in some ruins and some wandering trolls (with the fortuitious intervention of a passing giant centipede!) in the first few days. Clever use of recovered bear traps make short work of Tuskgutter, the Dire Boar that caused fear in many a local trapper. They make best speed to Oleg’s to wash the stink from their bodies and claim their rewards for the many severed heads they carry.

The next week is a chance to rest and prepare for the future. Potions are brewed, seige engines repaired(!) and training given to the local militia. As the area becomes safer more traders/trappers are seen at the Trading Post. Svetlana (Oleg’s wife) is still desperate for the return of her wedding ring – but a bag of Moon Radishes will take a good second place!

Back on the trail and the party skirt east through the barren lands with nought to see but the scarred rocks where wyvern claim their prey. Circling west and luck stikes with the discovery of some long abandoned treasure and an old mine awaiting reworking.

After crossing east again via a bridge in poor repair the lair of malicious fey (mites) is discovered. Resolved to remove the vicous creatures from the land the group venture underground and make short work of the runts. But the warren is only half explored….

Tatzlwyrms and Tornado!

30th Gozran 4710 The group head East through the forest to find their path blocked by the smelly and wide Skunk River. Electing to head south along it’s bank, with Tarnik’s raven familiar performing scouting duties. As a storm gradually whips up they come to a shallow crossing formed from the remains of an old bridge. The party were attacked by three Tatzlwyrms as they attempted to make their crossing. The three lizards were no match for the group (despite Tusk having to fight his while gripping the side of the bridge for dear life)and the tornado that struck just after the fight caused more injuries, but the hardest part was the clumsy attempts to cross the river with more than one adventurer falling in and needing rescuing. The trial was worth it as the group dicovered it’s first real haul of magical treasure!

Filling In Some Blanks

26th – 29th Gozran 4710 THe group drift west, re-clearing the the giant frogs from the source of the river and then moving out of the forest. Then south-east to a old statue dedicated to Earastil.

To the Temple of the Elk

20th – 21st Gozran 4710 Despite a strong thunderstorm, the party press themselves to return to the Trading Post in one day, arriving late at night. After a short sleep that did nothing to refresh them a funeral service, ministered by Rogar (and therefore a little on the dull side) was held for Boryenka Garess, and he was buried on a hill overlooking the Trading Post.

The party also hired Neleksa to look after their newly acquired homing pigeons while they attend to their charter duties, even paying her a year in advance!

A new friend was made (although Rogar would disagree) with Sindarion, a half-elven druid with a pioneering spirit (and a mountain lion) who has thrown his lot in with the group. With Jhod accompanying them they resolve to head out once again to the Temple of Erastil the next day.

23rd – 24th Gozran 4710 They travel via the Moon Radish patch and then the nesting site of Pervilash and Ty-Tigger-Tut who introduced themsleves to the new druid. They make their own crossing of the Thorn River.

25th Gozran 4710 The temple is a blighted site, over come with mosses, brambles and fungi. The guardians soon make themselves known – a cursed bear and swarms of vile spiders. The bear, mad with rage, was a vicious foe but teamwork prevailed and the beast was put down – only for the corpse to transform into the human form of a priest of Erastil. The nature of the curse was revealed to Jhod upon touching the cursed cleric’s holy symbol…that the priest, fallen into evil was transformed into an immortal, insane bear to guard the temple until slain. Jhod resolves to take on stewardship of the temple site.

Altered Plans

18th Gozran 4710 With Jhod accompanying the group, they head out to reclaim the Temple of Erastil, collecting Moon Radishes on the way. An over night camp saw a troll attack and eat one of their horses before being dispatched.

19th Gozran 4710 Travelling through the region of the Thorn River Camp they find the bandits have retaken the territory. Intent on not letting the brigands get a new foothold they instantly embark on clearance. Both sides attack each other cautiously but Boryenka, in typical glory seeking fashion rushes too far ahead of his companions and was stabbed from behind by the lieutenant of the repopulated camp. He was the first to fall, but was avenged by his fellow adventurers.

The group plan to return to Oleg’s to heal and mourn.

The Fey and the Frogs

4th Gozran 4710 The party continue exploring, and a dead trapper is found. The grease spell, as well a ‘Kick Me’ note on the back, the campfire going out and missing items, are dedeuced (by Syluss) to be the work of the fey. Knowing they can be tempted into showing themselves for gifts a fair bit of pleading ensues before the Perlivash (a farie dragon) and Ty-Tigger-Tut (a Grig) reveal themselves. Friendships are made and the group progress onwards prank free, with knowledge of an abandoned Erastil temple to the south.

5th – 12th Gozran 4710 More exploring, this time acoss stark plains. A night-fight with a seemly very quiet Shambling Mound near an old barbarian grave marker the only entertainment! The group turn south to re-enter the forest near the source of the Thorn River – a pool of hot springs. The smelly party have only a few minutes to bathe before three giant frogs attack these intruders! The amphibians are slain. Tarnik reminds himself of his mantra: “Don’t get in the water!”.

13th – 16th Gozran 4710 The group travel back to Oleg’s Trading Post to rest a few days, make scrolls and pay a social call on Bokken. The Post’s population has grown by a couple of women: Naleksa Vijic (the cheerful camp follower) and Anza the Jay (embittered widow who acts as a guide). Jhod Kavken, the priest of Erastil is invited to accompany the group the re-discoverer the lost temple revealed to them by Pervilash and Ty-Tigger-Tut.

Treks & Traps

20th – 27th Pharast 4710 After the storm the group once again carry out a methodical search of the area, taking it slower to gather supplies as they go. A dawn attack by a worg (quickly dispatched) and a tense moment with a party of kobolds from the infamous Sootscale tribe gathering the much prized moon radishes (disaster averted by some exceptional diplomacy) interrupted the circular route back to Oleg’s Trading Post.

28th – 29th Pharast 4710 While Syluss, Rogar and Boryenka ponder the state of the aging catapults that stand on the towers of the Trading Post, Tusk, Tantomony and Tarnik head out to revisit Bokken to discuss potions and poison, avoiding a drunken troll en route. The old hermit is very interested in moon radishes and strikes a deal to trade potions for the prized root. He attempts to cement the deal with a round of his revolting beer but only Tarnik can summon the will to drink it, and then only once. They return to Oleg’s the next day.

30th Pharest – 3rd Gozran 4710 It’s back on the road again, travelling west before circling south. The region seems littered with bear traps making the group cautious, firstly of traps and secondly of bears! Nerves are further tested after the group (well Tantomony) falls victim to a grease spell.
